Help your sailing team.....

Sheridan Shore Sailing School is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit organization that introduces the sport of sailing to people young and old from all over the Chicagoland area. During our fall and spring seasons, we host Beacon Academy, Evanston Township High School, and Loyola Academy sailing teams. In the summer, we run camps for children ages 6-18 where we teach sailing in a safe and fun environment. The SSSS Board and employees are currently targeting opportunities to enhance the program, safety, competition, and education of the sailors.

In 2014, Sheridan Shore Sailing School became accredited as one of 26 US Sailing Community Sailing Centers. This honor recognizes that SSSS exceeds all the required standards set forth by U.S. Sailing and maintains an impressive commitment to high quality public access to sailing through our educational resources and outstanding staff. We are thrilled to be part of this select community.

As an accredited US Sailing Center, we are striving to improve our competitive edge. We have a positive working relationship with the Wilmette Harbor Club and the time for development is now. It is an exciting time as the Wilmette Harbor Club is constructing a new floating dock in the harbor that will be rented by SSSS. This dock will have a fast launching system that will allow multiple boats to launch and dock at the same time. This will increase the amount of time on the water for sailors by 30-35 minutes each practice session. Construction will begin during the summer of 2019.

For the last 9 years, Sheridan Shore Sailing School has had the largest number of enrolled sailors in the Chicagoland area. The high school programs coupled with the SSSS summer race teams participate in sailing 9 months of the year. Operation at this capacity obviously strains all of our gear and equipment. Last year our annual appeal helped to purchase 10 brand new Zim 420 sailboats as well as new sails. We are currently constructing an annual inventory replacement program to keep our equipment up to date. Decreasing the amount of time spent repairing equipment results in increased instructional time on the water spent developing our talented sailors. I believe that at SSSS we have structured leadership, elite coaching, and sharp focus needed to stay on top. Safety is our highest priority. This year one of our fundraising goals in a new coaching/safety RIB which can be used in high sea conditions. Another fundraising goal focuses on replacing our existing trailer in order to haul 4 boats as well as the coach RIB in order to compete in out-of-town regattas.

As the executive director of the sailing school, I can ensure that every dollar we receive will go straight towards the funding of our targeted goals below. Donations of all denominations are welcome. Please feel free to forward this email to family, friends, and businesses. We would love to see some positive fundraising progress prior to our spring sailing season which starts in late March 2019. Please help our Sailing Teams reach our goals. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Zachary A. Hernandez
Executive Director of Sailing

2019 National Competition & Safety Support Goals

Sheridan Shore Sailing School is a 501 (c)(3) non-for-profit organization.  ALL donations are Tax Deductible.

Goal 1: New Safety Boat

Safety Boat  - $30,000 with motor and trailer

Obtaining a new safety boat specifically increases coach visibility on the water and decreases response time. A durable safety boat with a center console would be used in high sea regatta conditions, which is often the case.

Goal 2: New Race Trailer

2017 420 Trailer

Race Trailer  - $15,000 delivered

Safety never takes a holiday! The trailer we currently use for transporting 420s to away regattas needs replacing and updating allowing increased room on the trailer for a coach boat as well. Our coaches need a reliable trailer on the highway.

New Floating Dock Starting Summer Of 2019

One of the most exciting pieces of "new" news is the SSSS floating dock construction. Wilmette Harbor Club and SSSS have partnered to construct a brand new floating dock in the harbor for 420 storage and launching. In the past, we were limited by the launching process because it was time-consuming due to the current narrow ramp.

This proposed launch ramp coming off the new dock will allow multiple boats to launch and load simultaneously, resulting in 30-35 more minutes of time on the water for all sailors per practice. This is an amazing structural improvement that will produce increased instructional opportunities for all. Construction will begin during the summer of 2019.

Increasing Our Endowment Fund

We are consistently targeting to increase our endowment fund through philanthropic opportunities. Currently, it stands at $20,000. We use 5% of this annually for student scholarships for fees, personal equipment, and program enhancements. We would love to see this endowment increase annually.

Sheridan Shore Sailing School is pleased to offer a Scholarship Fund, which is distributed to a handful of students each year on a need-based basis. We want to thank the many organizations that assist with our scholarships: Beacon Academy, Evanston Sailing Club, Loyola Academy Sailing Club, and The Friederici Fund.

Scholarships are available for tuition, gear, and equipment. Our goal is to get as many children on the water in order to enjoy the lifelong sport of sailing. All details pertaining to available SSSS scholarships can be found on our website. Thank you.
